Common Questions
I am completely new to wigs. Where should I start?
Start with our Start Here page, then take the six measurements in the SIW Size Guide and compare the cap options. The Essential Cap — 11×5 is often the simplest place to begin. If you are still unsure, book a consultation before ordering. You do not need to understand every technical term first.
What is the Core Collection?
The Core Collection is one thoughtfully curated range across five silhouettes and nine lengths, from 10 to 26 inches. Begin with The Bob, Lob, Midi, Long or Maxi, then choose your colour, cut & style, size, cap, density, ear tabs and optional silicone grip. The 26-inch Maxi is Made to Order, and The Freedom Cap — Full Lace is available from 14 inches and above only.
Is every SIW cap glueless?
Yes. Glueless fit is standard across the Core Collection, so tape or glue is not required for everyday wear. Fit, ear tabs, adjustable straps, the optional wider band and any selected silicone help create security. Security still depends on your measurements, head shape, activity and chosen cap. If you personally prefer extra hold, you can still use a small amount of tape or glue by choice.
Which cap should I choose?
Choose Essential for easier everyday wear, Versatile for more parting space or Freedom for maximum movement and styling possibilities. The Freedom Cap — Full Lace is our most flexible fully glueless option, with individually tied hair and a soft, stretchy cotton back instead of a full delicate lace back or wefts, and is available from 14 inches and above only. More lace is not automatically better; the right choice depends on how you want to wear, style and handle the wig. View our SIW Cap Guide here
How do I choose my size?
Take all six SIW measurements at least twice: circumference, front to nape, ear to ear across the forehead, ear to ear over the top, temple to temple around the back and nape of neck. Compare the full set with the SIW Size Guide. Circumference alone does not tell the full fit story because two people with the same circumference can have different head lengths and widths. If your measurements fall across sizes, contact us before ordering.
What is included as standard?
Every Core Collection piece includes 100% virgin human hair, standard HD lace, clean bleached knots, a softly pre-plucked hairline and a glueless construction with adjustable straps. Single or V-shaped ear tabs are included and selected by you. Combs are optional, as is a removable wider adjustable band and silicone grip at the ear tabs and/or across the back of the cap. Essential and Versatile use a diamond-net wefted interior; Freedom uses individually tied Full Lace with a soft, stretchy cotton back instead of a full delicate lace back or wefts.
What is the difference between Ready-to-Ship and Made-to-Order?
Ready-to-Ship pieces are already made and photographed in their exact specification. Made-to-Order pieces are created after you choose from the available options on the Core Collection product page.
Can I return a wig?
Return eligibility depends on whether the piece is standard or personalised and whether it remains in returnable condition. Read the Returns and Cancellations Policy before removing seals, cutting the lace, wearing, washing, styling or altering the wig.
Can I get help before ordering?
Yes. Book a free, no-pressure online or Haarlem consultation with Natalie, or send a message through the Contact page.
Caps, fit and security
What is the difference between single and V-shaped ear tabs?
Single tabs have a slimmer, lighter-feeling shape around the ears. V-shaped tabs provide a more structured shape around the ear area. Neither is universally better; the most comfortable option depends on your head shape, preferences and whether you wear glasses.
Do I need silicone?
Not necessarily. Silicone can add grip when worn directly against a hair-free scalp, but it may also make the cap feel warmer or closer. Choose silicone on the ear tabs, across the back of the cap, in both areas or not at all.
Can I wear an SIW wig on a completely hair-free scalp?
Yes. SIW caps are designed with hair-free scalps in mind. Silicone at the ear tabs and/or across the back of the cap is optional for extra grip, and combs are optional across all cap types. If you have a completely hair-free scalp, you may prefer no combs with silicone grip instead.
Can I wear an SIW wig if I have bio hair?
Yes. SIW is created with hair loss and sensitive-scalp needs in mind, but anyone can wear our wigs. Prepare your hair as flat as you expect to wear it beneath the wig before measuring, and tell us if clips, combs or silicone may affect your comfort.
Can I wear glasses with an SIW cap?
Yes, but the fit around the temples matters. Some wearers find a slimmer single ear tab easier with glasses. Send us your ear-to-ear measurement and tell us about your frames if you would like advice.
What if my wig does not fit?
Contact us before altering the wig. We will ask for your measurements, photographs and details of how the fit feels. Return, exchange or adjustment options depend on the product type, its condition and the applicable policy.
Hair, colour and construction
Are SIW wigs made with real human hair?
Yes. Every Core Collection wig is made with 100% virgin human hair. Like all human-hair wigs, it needs moisture, gentle handling and heat protection.
What does virgin human hair mean?
Virgin human hair is hair that has not been chemically coloured, bleached, permed or otherwise processed before it is collected. The cuticles remain intact and aligned in the same direction, which helps the hair feel smoother, behave more naturally and reduce tangling. Every SIW wig begins with high-quality virgin black hair. The hair is then professionally lightened, coloured and toned at the factory to create the shades you see in the Core Collection. Once coloured, the finished wig has been processed, so we use “virgin” to describe the quality and condition of the original hair, not to suggest that the final coloured wig has never been treated.
What does density mean on a wig cap?
Density refers to how much hair is added to the wig cap and determines how light, full or thick the finished wig feels and looks. A lower density gives a softer, lighter and more natural finish, while a higher density creates more fullness and volume. SIW offers 130% for a light and natural feel, 150% for natural fullness and 180% for a fuller, more voluminous look. Density describes the overall amount of hair on the wig and is different from the length of the hair.
Which cut & styles can I choose?
Choose Blunt & Straight for a cleaner, more defined finish or Layered & Wavy for softer movement and shape.
Can I change the parting on my wig?
Yes. You can change the parting, but how much flexibility you have depends on the cap. The Essential Cap — 11×5 can be parted within its lace area, while The Versatile Cap — 13×6 gives you more space to move the parting. The Freedom Cap — Full Lace offers the greatest styling freedom. To reset the part, lightly dampen the hair, comb it into place and use gentle, low heat if needed. Avoid forcing a part into a wefted area or applying direct heat or pressure to the lace.
How many colours are available?
The Core Collection offers 13 wearable shades: two blacks, five brunettes, four blondes and two reds, including brunette and blonde balayage options.

How are SIW wigs coloured?
Every SIW shade starts with virgin black hair and is then professionally lightened, coloured and toned during the factory production process. Working from the same natural base allows the colour to be applied in a controlled, consistent way, helping create balanced tones, repeatable roots, highlights and balayage, and better colour stability and fade resistance than many colours added to a finished wig later. Factory-coloured does not mean fade-proof. Sunlight, heat, frequent washing, hard water and unsuitable products can still alter or dull the shade over time. Use colour-safe, sulphate-free products, wash only when needed, always use heat protectant and store the wig away from direct sunlight.
Will the colour look exactly like it does on my screen?
Screens, lighting and surroundings can all change how colour appears. Natural human hair and hand-applied colour can also vary slightly. Ready-to-Ship pieces are photographed individually, while Made-to-Order shades follow the selected colour direction rather than promising a pixel-perfect match. If colour is your main concern, contact us before ordering.
Why can knots still be visible?
Knots are where the hair is secured to the lace. Bleaching can soften their appearance, but no treatment makes every knot disappear under every light or on every skin tone. Over-bleaching can weaken the hair, so the aim is a balanced, natural finish.
What are return hairs and how do I manage them?
Return hairs are the shorter hairs you may notice around the top, parting or hairline of a human-hair wig. They are created during the knotting and ventilation process when a longer strand is secured to the lace and a short end remains. They are a normal part of lace-wig construction and are not the same as breakage or shedding.
To manage return hairs, lightly mist the area with water or a small amount of styling product, then smooth them in the direction of the hair using a fine comb or edge brush. If you use heat, keep it low and avoid direct heat or pressure on the lace. Avoid pulling, plucking or cutting return hairs too close to the lace, as this can weaken the knots and encourage shedding. With washing, styling and wear, return hairs often soften and settle more naturally.
Will human hair shed?
Some shedding is normal because hair is secured into lace and, on wefted cap areas, into the cap construction, and the wig is handled, brushed and washed. Sudden or excessive shedding should be reported with clear photographs and care information so we can assess it.
Does HD lace last forever?
No. HD lace is fine and chosen for a natural-looking finish, which also makes it delicate. It can soften or fray with wear. Gentle handling and limited tension around the hairline will help protect it.
Can I colour my SIW wig?
Human hair can often be coloured, but previous colour processing affects what is safely possible. Any colour change is at your own risk unless completed or approved by SIW. Always strand test and use an experienced wig colourist.
Can I cut the lace myself?
Yes, if the piece is supplied with uncut lace and you are confident doing so. Once the lace is cut, the wig is altered and return eligibility may change. If you are unsure, ask about a lace-cutting or fitting service before dispatch.
Ordering and pricing
Why did the price change when I chose my options?
The selected length sets the starting price. Your final total can then change depending on cap and density, plus any separately priced optional services or additions where applicable. The updated total is shown before you add the piece to your bag.
Are prices shown with VAT?
The live webshop will show the legally required consumer price for your market. Taxes and any additional costs will be clear before payment.
How long does Made-to-Order take?
The current production estimate is shown beside the availability label and repeated in your order confirmation.
Why do I have to approve a specification?
The written specification makes sure we agree on the cap, size, length, colour direction, density, cut & style, selected options, price and estimated timing before production begins.
Can I change a Made-to-Order specification after payment?
Contact us immediately. Changes cannot be guaranteed once production has started and may affect the price, timing or cancellation status.
Care and everyday wear
How often should I wash my wig?
As a general guide, wash it after around 10 to 15 wears, or sooner if there is product build-up, odour or reduced movement. You can gently refresh the lace with micellar water and a cotton pad between washes, taking care not to scrub it.
Does a human hair wig lose some of its smoothness after washing?
Yes. A human hair wig can feel slightly less silky or smooth after washing, especially over time. Because the hair is no longer attached to a scalp, it is not naturally replenished with oils, and washing can also remove some of the conditioning or finishing products used during manufacture.
A good wash routine should help restore softness: use a gentle sulphate-free shampoo, condition the mid-lengths and ends, avoid scrubbing the hair, detangle carefully and use a light leave-in product or serum if needed.
The wig should not suddenly feel very rough, matted or excessively dry after one careful wash. If it does, hard water, heat, previous colour processing, unsuitable products or the condition of the hair may all play a part.
What products should I use?
Choose gentle, sulphate-free products suitable for coloured human hair and use them lightly. Keep oils, serums and conditioner away from the knots and cap. Product recommendations may vary by colour and finished style.
Can I use heat tools?
Yes, but always use heat protectant, choose the lowest effective temperature and keep hot tools away from the lace, silicone and cap materials.
How should I store my wig?
Make sure it is completely dry, lightly detangle it and store it in its protective pouch away from direct sunlight, heat and humidity. A stable stand is useful for a styled wig in regular rotation.
Can I sleep in my wig?
Sleeping in a wig increases friction, tangling and wear. If you choose to do it, protect the hair with a silk or satin covering and expect that the wig may need more care.
Can I swim in it?
You can, but chlorine, salt water and repeated soaking can dry the hair and affect its colour. Consider wearing an older wig, secure it for the activity, then rinse and condition it afterwards.
